Libreoffice crashing on Linux

I am running 6.1.3.2 on Opensuse Leap 15 and libreoffice crashes without opening a window from my account. It does work fine from the root account, which suggests that there is some resource file that causes the crash. I removed my $HOME/.config/libreoffice directory, but this does not fix the problem (the directory has been regenerated by libreoffice). I can use some non-window based options, e.g., libreoffice --convert-to pdf *.docx, but none of the --impress, --calc --writer options work. I also uninstalled and reistalled libreoffice to no avail.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I'm not an expert on this at all, but as a test I might uninstall this version, and install an older version and see if that works. Also be sure to check all of the appropriate logs. And if that fails, can you do a full uninstall, aka apt purge or the like, reinstall and try again. Do other GUI programs work for you ok? Any other system issues? Also where did you get the download from? Be sure to get the one from libreoffice.org if you can.

It seems LibreOffice Writer has serious troubles in the most recent versions. It makes Linux systems (maybe only when working with KDE) crash in the most catastrophic way. First the screen gets blocked, you are not able to do anything, but moving the mouse cursor (interestingly this keeps working). After a few seconds, the screen goes to black and the system halts without any care for anything.

I've gone through many forums. Changing memory assignation does not help. The failure tends to happen with non-trivial documents, independently of the size (seems more often with long documents, though). May be some relation with mark, copy, paste operations, but this is not sure either.

Somebody reported that they had to go to an older version of LibreOffice and the trouble dissapears, I am considering this possibility. In any case, I wonder how, I wonder why, LibreOffice team is not solving this catastrophic situation that is annoying so many people (just search to see how many cases of sudden crash are being reported).

My configuration:

OpenSuse Leap 42.3 (64 bits), kernel 4.4.162-78-default KDE Plasma 5.8.7 LibreOfice 6.0.5.2, included in OpenSuse official distribution and later updated from official repositories

Best regards,

David

"I wonder how, I wonder why" could someone "solve" something that is not reproducible? The bug contains a request for a useful backtrace - which wasn't created by anyone experiencing this.

Dear Mike, thanks a lot. I understand the difficulty to grasp on failures that are difficult to reproduce. I would be very please to provide that thing you call "a backtrace". In order to be helpful, and not only critical, I would need some indications on how to do this. I may ready to try this before moving to LibreOffice 4.2.8.2., that seems to be the only solution up to date. I've seen in tdf#112610 that I have to install the debug package for OpenSuse. No idea about how to do that. Any indication will be welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can tell you how to install debug packages for OpenSUSE, given that I use Windows.

I see. Thanks again, Mikhail. I am not a hacker, just a simple user, and I'm afraid I need clear indications to dive into these tasks. I think I will go on with this matter at the bug page, tdf#112610, and see if anybody there can show me the light.
