I have looked at the options and cannot find a way to have the application open WITHOUT automatically opening a new blank document. I would greatly prefer to just see the recent documents screen without having to close the unwanted blank document first. Thank you!

If there is no way to open an LO application or component (Writer, Calc, etc) in the way that you want ((there might be; I just don't know)), you might consider opening the LO main panel or dashboard (I've forgotten what they call it) instead. It opens with the thumbnails of recent documents. If you are using Windows (you didn't say), look for just LibreOffice in your list of applications, rather than LO Writer, etc. Create a shortcut for just LO so you can start that way.

I don't care for the blank document. As soon as the component is launched (new blank document window), I select from File>Recent documents and the chosen document replaces the blank one. No need to close the blank window. (This may be Linux specific, check for other OSes).

Awesome! Thanks to all for the input. I do use the recent documents list sometimes; I guess it's just pure stubbornness on my part that I've been looking for a way to completely avoid the blank. So opening via the "main" L.O. shortcut instead of using the Writer shortcut looks to perfectly solve the "problem." Thanks again!

Running LibreOffice without specifying the module or document should do Just that: show the Start Center screen with recent documents list. Shortcuts that launch specific modules (like swriter) Will always open a new document.
