Scratch text section of a Calc sheet?

I have a crude calorie calculator spreadsheet I track daily consumption on. Right now, I have notes scattered in vacant cells below the calculating section. There’s not really enough space, there’s no control over returns (for obvious reasons), and I frequently have to resize rows to hold more lines. This is far from an ideal solution and, if I must, I will switch to a split-screen view with Calc on top and Notepad++ on bottom, but I’d much prefer an all-in-one solution.

Is it possible to somehow add a scratch sheet ‘floating’ over proper cells that I can just take notes on, or does no such feature exist?

I do realize this sort of thing isn’t what spreadsheets are intended for, but I’ve been unable to find mind mapping software or similar which has spreadsheet functionality (including basic arithmetic) in addition to flexible text editing.

Example:
calc.jpg (and yeah, this should’ve been a png :P)

You can add a comment to each cell. You can then choose whether the comment remains permanently visible or only if you move the mouse over it.

Highlight a cell and right-click on it and choose “Insert comment”.

Sorry for the delay, but thanks so much as this is just what I wanted. I’d upvote your answer, but I need 5 karma before I can vote for anything.
