Using "Format Cells" > "Numbers" > "User-defined" with the format code of ###-###-#### only results in "###" in the cell.

This error occurs with version on Mac OS 10.8.

However, this works properly with version on Mac OS 10.6.

Here is the error:

I thought you would like to know that you are not alone. I'm on Linux Mint 13, using LibO I've been experimenting a bit, and getting some odd results. P.S. Can confirm, too, that "Formulae" check box is cleared, cf. @OldBoricuainLA comment. See the bottom of my screenshot: it's trying to do a sum? P.P.S. Fix suggested below!

The problem is that your column is too narrow. Compare A and B cols in screenshot below, both with same formatting:

Does widening Column A fix it for you?

@David: Yes, widening Column A fixed it! Thank you!

@superhua - glad that sorted it - so simple, yet so baffling! Note, too, that you can "name" your "User defined" number code by clicking the middle button to the right of the box that has "###-###-####" in it. I think the tooltip is "comment", but you could name it "Telephone format" and it will show up as such in the listing, rather than (the odd!) "---1234".
