Please help. I need this to submit my university essays. How do I add space before a paragraph?

I’m not talking about the vertical space between two paragraphs, I mean the empty space at the start of every paragraph. Which is the around the size of one word. Example:

(space) today I’m going to try finish my assignments…

I have a lot of essays and plenty of pages so It’s not convenient to do this manually. Plus I’m afraid the size of each space would be different by mistake. There probably is a formatting option for this so please let me know.

Thanks so much in advance!

As far as I know, there are two ways to do this: using ctrl + A, but this is far from the best way, I would choose the second option - styles, it works much better and is much more reliable for writing essays, and this is exactly what all experts in writing papers.

Ctrl-A to select your entire essay.

Then Format, Paragraph, Indents & Spacing, Indent first line {amount}, Ok.

You’re done.

BTW, you can also do this with a desk rodent by dragging the upper pointer of the ruler at the top of your document.

Hope this answers your question.

This is of course a working method - but it is a direct formatting, which is something very bad fundamentally.

E.g., if your essays contain headings, or tables, or lists, figure captions, etc, doing that (Ctrl+A then applying manual formatting) would also change formatting of all those elements, possibly unwanted.

A proper way is using styles; if your main text uses some style (e.g. Text Body) consistently throughout your essay; your headings all use Heading 1/2/…; your tables have a dedicated table content style and so on, you would only need to change your Text Body style to have all sites using it updated throughout the entire text without undesirable effects on unrelated parts.

I agree with Mike; using styles is better.

Ctrl-A and direct formatting may be brutal and sub-optimal, but is assured of being an effective fix for simple college essay,

YMMV

College is a place to learn. Learn how to do things the right way. It’s the place to spend extra time to understand - the luxury we often miss when we later do our dayjob. Thinking that a college student can do it now quick and dirty just because those simple things are simple, and hoping that later, when the need arises, that student would magically be able to do it the right way, is daydreaming.

Hmmm. I tried to daydream, but my mind kept wandering.
