Header & Page numbering

Inserting a header and page numbers to multiple pages and try to print both sides causes my NEW printer to shut down. It’s NOT the printer. If I leave off the header and page numbers, it will print two sided perfectly. Epson thought it might be the printer so they sent me another new one and the results are the same. First, is there a way to insert headers and page numbers WITHOUT it appearing gray with the page number inside? I have attached a sample of the first page of a document so you can see what I am speaking about.Play List - 04-04-2019 Show with Phil’s notes_3.docx

Thankx for the thoughts and help,

The gray background for page number is just a visual clue that the number has not been typed by you but inserted with a field. The background does not print.

If that bothers you, you can uncheck View>Field shadings but I don’t recommend it because you would lose the field clue.

Does the printer behave the same if you save your document as .odt? Save it as such, close, open the newly saved .odt and try printing.

Nota: do not use an answer but a comment to give more information.

Thank you for the rapid response. To answer your question, yes it makes no difference what format. I’ve tried odt, doc, docx and even rtf – makes no difference UNLESS I remove the header and page numbers. I will try and uncheck View>Field shadings and see if that makes a difference. OBTW, the printer is an EPSON WF-2750. So you have a reference.I will report findings. I know that would help should this unusual problem show up again. Thank you again.

Update: I tried unchecking View>Field shadings. That made no difference. Then I copied the document and pasted it (in docx format) into a new document page. When i did that I added back the header and the RED page numbers. Again, it printed 2/3 of a page and then the printer shut down, As a last resort I changed the page numbers from RED to BLACK. This time it printed front and back with no problems. I can’t say for certain that remedied the problem and I will be leaving the printer in a few days to return to my other home up north. So, until I can test it again, I’ve got what I needed for now. Thank you very much. It may help someone else.

I’m not surprised it made no difference. As I wrote, this gray background is only displayed on screen as a reminder and not sent to the printer. Since it starts printing then hangs, it may be related to some version of the printing language (either PostScript or PDF with most recent printers). I use an old (but hi-res) printer and I take care to specify in the CUPS printer driver that I want an old version of PostScript (my printer does not handle PDF natively). This might be a lead.
