Impress fade transition broken

I have struggled with this issue for years. I run a church service every Sunday and use Impress with the fade transition between every slide. With older versions of Ubuntu I would lock out more recent versions of Libreoffice and load an older version which would sometimes work. My most recent solution was to remove ogl-trans- as soon as I did this the fade worked. I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 19.04 and the fade is once again broken, but removing ogltrans makes no difference. I completely removed Libreoffice and reinstalled- this made the issue worse- whenever the fade transition is on all the slides jag terribly and videos stutter as they play. I downloaded a fresh copy of Ubuntu 19.04 and reimaged my drive from scratch. This made no difference. I am running a Dell Latitude E7240, but my desktop computer has the same issue.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks
Ian
