Ok; and if you first stop Windows Update service, then start installation of LibreOffice - does it make any difference?

Tried that on a fresh boot, but no joy

Are there any error reports in your system log about problems with Windows Update maybe?

Would l look in C:\Users\al\AppData\Local\Temp? What file / fold would I look at? A LOT of gooble-de-gook stuff in there?

Oh, sorry. Open the event viewer, please: 6 Ways to Open Event Viewer in Windows 10

You’d possibly need to look at System and Application logs.
