.doc contain old versions

Hi.

I wondering to know if is possible that a .doc archive exported with libreoffice contain a old version or a history of changes in the document.

Thanks!

It is a very long time since I last used a .doc file with Word. As far as I can remember, Save only adds the difference between the previous state of the file and the current content of the document. This means the file size grows continually, even if you erase a large part of the document. This is why it was necessary to perform a Save as from time to time to decrease the file size.

That said, when such a file is loaded, Word or Writer will always present the latest state to the user. I’m not aware of any option in the input filter for LO Writer allowing to select a previous version (in case the antiquated save strategy is still used).

If your question arises from a need to “salvage” some prior version, you’re on your own and you’ll have to hack yourself the file.

Since the .doc format (not to speak of .docx) is a proprietary closed format, it evolves constantly to meet the needs and requirements of its owner without any consideration for external compatibility (there no need to because it’s private). What I mentioned above might even no longer be true nowadays.

Ok, i understand.

Do you think that If i install the Word 2003 i can haverá access to old version of the document?

And i already sended to you the archives on your e-mail.

Thanks for the help (:

I don’t think Word ever allowed to crawl backwards in time, because this "incremental save"is not part of user-visible specification. I believe it was only a solution of laziness for the development team. The implementation itself is not clean.

I have not yet received your archive.
