How to select entire column while using vlookup function in calc

What @oweng describes works also in Windows.

Additional trick when using vlookup formulas and you need to select a long part of an empty column. Click into to top or bottom cell of the empty column, keep ctrl pressed and go the filled in neighbor row. Use @oweng’s ctrl+shift+ down or up arrow, and move back to the empty column. Result the empty colum is selected over the same length as the neighboring columns. This works in Windows. Other, just try.
