I go to file -> properties and the author there is not me. how do I change that?

Go to File | Properties, ensure Apply user data is checked, and click the Reset Properties button. You might want to try it first on a copy of the file. Don't forget to Save the file to keep the changes.

This may work (I did not save it), but it also erases or resets the create date, and I want the original create date. So I don't know how to separate the two elements - the author is in the same data field as the create date.
This should have been committed as a comment to @robleyd's answer. Your "answer" is now separate from the one it is related to (this site is not a forum with discussion threads but a Q&A). Please, create a comment with it at the proper location and delete this "answer".
If you are not afraid of doing a risky job, you can try the following procedure which will preserve original creation date and all other properties.
<office:meta>
element containing all "properties". Find the author name and replace it.Note that this procedure acts on a copy of the original file. So, if something goes wrong, just discard the copy and think over what happened.
