How do I save a Writer 4.0 document to another mounted drive on my Linux computer?
I could do this with OpenOffice. Surely this can be done without saving a file and making the transfer with another program.

Please provide more detail. What protocol are you using i.e., NFS? How is the remote location mounted i.e., /etc/fstab entry? What options do you have on the mount? LO can certainly save to remote locations (I do so here constantly) so it is likely you have a network configuration issue or a problem with you distribution.
