The phrase “superordinate object settings” is usually one of the options for text direction. This is the default setting for English and I am fine with using it.
But what does it mean in plain English? How is it different from the left-to-right option?
A paragraph may be top-level (and then its superordinal object would be page with its style), or it might belong to a frame, a section, a table… With arbitrary nesting.
For objects which have an explicit setting, like left-to-right, the direction is fixed. For objects with “superordinate object settings” it depends on parent object setting, defaulting to what is defined for language (not necessary left-to-right).
