upgrading LO on Win 8 from version 5 to 6.
do I need to back up customizations or settings, or will they carry over?

Hello @asked, I never had problems with updates.
Once you make a change to the configuration or installation of extensions, this folder is created:
If in doubt, rename the LibreOffice folder to LibreOfficeOld, install it, and then copy the internal folders to the new folder.
