In simple terms I suggest:
- Back up your User Profile. This will save any dictionaries and other custom settings you have created.
- Uninstall v3.5.
- Install v4.0.
- If necessary, copy back those parts of you User Profile you require. Testing each one at a time to ensure compatibility.
This is obviously not the only way to go about it, but it is a fairly platform agnostic set of instructions. I would always use the uninstall / install method when upgrading across significant versions i.e., v3 series to v4 series.
Nowdays versions can be tricky one. Actually version 4.0 was renamed from 3.7, so actually it is not such a big migration, I suppose. On Windows I like to use some tool like e.g. Revo Uninstaller Freeware from http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html to make sure that uninstall processs really cleans up all (or at least most of them) leftovers.
