I just installed Libre, and figured out how to add to the autocorrect dictionary. I enter an abbreviation, then what I want to substitute, and click new, and it goes onto the list. Okay up to that point, but then if I click okay, it closes autocorrect and the new entry disappears. Am I missing a step?

You aren’t missing any steps. You just found a bug.
However if (after pressing Ok to add the new item to the list) you type the abbreviation and press Enter, it should be replaced correctly. Then comes the absurd part: if you Exit LibreOffice (saving or not the document) and then reopen it, the new entry should be in the Replace list. Apparently, after you get the first one on the list you don’t need to Exit after each new item (which is good 
).

Still doesn’t work for me no matter what I try.
@forestphil, just type whatever text you want to be replaced or corrected (e.g. type replaced), select the word, click on Tools > Autocorrect Options. The selected word should show up on the With field, you just need to type in the Replace box (e.g. rpl), click on New and then on OK. From now on typing rpl followed by a space or and an Enter will automatically be corrected to replaced.
