I've been looking at this for a while now but can't figure it out. I have multiple places in a writer document that need to be input fields where if you change one they all change. at first I thought the right thing to investigate was 'variables' but have since changed my mind in favor of 'fields'. Why do they make such (what I consider) a basic function so difficult to do? Could someone point me in the right direction?

I think better take a look to documentation:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#LibreOffice_Writer_Guide
Chapter 14 Working with fields.

If conditional text does not adequate to your purpose. I think the solution could be go with "Chapter 11 Using Mail Merge" or "Chapter 15 Using Forms in Writer"

Also maybe this extension can help: FastMailMerge
"Easy save and print and/or mail of an odt/doc with data coming from a spreadsheet"
