Header/Footer in xls not displaying properly

Hello,
One of our users had an issue with an xls spreadsheet that contains a header and footer. The spreadsheet would have been created with Microsoft Office 2007. The header in the center is being displayed off-center. The footer is not displaying at all. I was able to fix both problems, but I need to know how to make these display properly by default as this may happen on SEVERAL xls spreadsheets that we have saved on our network.
I fixed the header by removing unneeded spaces from the end of the text. These spaces didn’t display when opened in Microsoft office.
The footer was fixed by going to Format > Page… > Footer tab > and checking the box next to AutoFit height. This box is already checked in the Header tab, so I’m not sure why it isn’t checked by default in the Footer tab.

If anyone could let me know how this can be fixed so that spreadsheets like these open the correct way by default I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
