I shut my computer down without saving my document. When I rebooted the computer updated consequently I cannot find it. Have tried options, paths, backup still cannot find document. Is there other means to recover?
When you exit LO “normally”, all temporaries are deleted. After all, you may want to discard your session work. There is no reason LO would override your decision (even if it is a blunder) on its own.
In case exit from LO was “abnormal” (a crash, power failure, etc.), temporaries and recovery information are still there. Restarting LO initiates recovery and you may recover your document in some previous state but latest state is not guaranteed (some edits may be lost).
Conclusion: if you don’t save your document, you can’t recover it. This statement is valid for any application.
However, depending on your OS (which you didn’t mention) and the filesystem category, you could use highly specialised utilities to salvage deleted files (targeting the LO temporaries) but chances of success are rather low. I add that the amount of work involved probably is not worth the pain compared to the time needed to retype the document.

Unfortunately no.
Lately, some applications start to implement a pattern in their “do not save” action, that I believe conceptually wrong, like “you are the user, and we know you are always wrong”: the programs save the file to a temporary storage fro several days (say, 2 weeks) just in case user was wrong. Possibly that started with MS Office (version 2016 already does that); I know another (small) app also doing that (a tool for creation animated GIFs). This builds carelessness in users, and anticipation that decisions don’t matter when you work with computers - they know everything better than you, and whatever you do, they would safeguard you from your own mistakes.
But possibly still something to consider as an RFE (if someone files such) in future.
