When I click the Open icon (or select File/Open) both Calc and Writer show a file open command using a . file filter. I would like for Calc to use a file filter which shows only spreadsheet files, and for Writer to use a file filter to show only text documents. I realize I can use the document type dropdown to select spreadsheet (or text) files, but this is an unnecessary step. Is there a way to customize the action of the Open commands?

AFAIK the answer is: No - there is no way to pass a document type to the file picker dialog.
