How to get the table of contents to show up in the table of contents

I have a table of contents of which the title is formatted as Heading 1, just like all the other chapters. But the problem I am have is that I want this table of contents title to show up as a chapter in the table of contents. Is there any way in which this is possible?

Your problem is an egg-and-hen dilemma. The TOC title is generated by the TOC engine and cannot be seen by the collection phase. You must “open the loop” to solve it. Here is my suggestion.

  • Manually insert your TOC title as a Heading 1 paragraph. The TOC will be later inserted below this heading, so leave an empty paragraph you will delete afterwards.

  • Type your document as usual (with the needed page breaks, etc.).

  • Go back to the empty paragraph and Insert>TOC & Index>TOC, Index or Bibliography. Ensure the title field is empty (not even a space character) so that the TOC engine will not add one.

In an existing document, add a manual Heading 1 TOC title above the existing TOC. Rignt-click in the TOC and Edit Index to erase the auto-generated title.

Note that you lose the possibility to format the TOC title independently from the other headings. You can correct this if you’re familiar with styles. Create a paragraph style for your TOC title and connect it to Outline level 1 in the Outline & Numbering tab. This specific paragraph style will also allow you to escape the TOC title from chapter numbering.
