If I adjust the styles pane to show a subset of styles where is this choice saved, will it be used on opening again?

@Lizat: You are asking, whether a setting survives a restart of LibreOffice, thus the action might be: Set, Close, Open, Check and that’s definitely not opaque.
Sorry but I think this is rather sarcastic and I didn’t understadn the original comment as the English is slighty odd, if you want to make that comment again I suggest you either say ‘why don’t you try it out’ or if you want to be that mean ‘what do you think you should do to find out?’.
In my case I didn’t want to mess things up and would rather know before I try it out. I am a word expert converting to LibreOffice rather fast. Whilst using Word I was encouraging people not making caustic comments I recommend you do the same it’s much more rewarding.

If you mean the bottom menu with All, Hierarchical, Applied Styles, etc., yes, your choice is remembered and will be used on next use.
