Full column formatting won't save [closed]

In Calc, is there a way to have the formatting of a full column stay saved between sessions? I will format a column, save and close the spreadsheet. Everything works as it should during that session but when it is reopened the only formatting that remains is in the cells that a value had been inputted. I want to continue adding to the formatted cells in each column, but have to reset the formatting each time.
Any thoughts?

Are you saving as an .ods file? I see the behavior you describe when I save as an .xlsx file, but not when I save as .ods (using LibreOffice 4.1.1)

Thank you for the reply. I have been saving as .xlsx only for the reason that I'm used to seeing that with all of the excel files we have saved.
I will try the native .ods to see if that helps. Thanks again for the suggestion.
