I’ve searched high and low for in-depth information on structured references in Calc, and I’ve come up with nothing of substance. I’ve found the odd question (here and elsewhere) and some vague answers, but nothing really helpful.
I have a lot more to ask on this topic, but I’ll keep that for later if no such documentation can be found.

I think this is a very important feature. There is a recent feature request [1] which anyone interested in should support. There is also a presentation by Eike Rathke back to 2015 [2] discussing implementation details.
