I’m a novice with Libre
Accidently saved a file in read-only mode
Now I want to edit it, but can’t. it’s too much to retype the whole thing again
thank you

This description may fit several different situations. What I can think of “off the cuff”:

  • If you saved your document with edit mode disabled, you should have no problem opening it. To allow editing, just toggle edit mode: Press ctrl+shift+M or select menu item Edit - Edit mode.
  • If you saved your document with a password, you need the password to open the file.
  • If your document is saved to a file which is now write protected, you should be able to “Save as” with a different name. Saving to the original file should also be possible by “removing the lock”.
  • The write protection may be caused by a “lock file”, which means that the document was not properly terminated before the computer was switched off. A lock file is hidden and the name is very similar to the document name, only the first few characters are “mangled”. To locate it, first enable display of hidden files.
  • It may also be a file system lock, which you should be able to resolve by using your file manager (often a right click on the file will give you a context menu where you can choose a Protection or Properties item.
  • If your document is saved as a PDF file (or other “digital paper” format), it is not easily editable. You should be able to copy content to a new document and continue typing from there. Expect some clutter.
