How do I insert comma separators for tel numbers

Trying to copy and paste a field of numbers to paste elsewhere but need to add comma separators

Are the commas to be part of the numbers (thus making them a string) or is it only a display convenience (i.e. number internally not modified but displayed differently)?

IMO ID-like things like tel numbers are always strings, regardless if they have commas or not. These entities are expected to consist of the specified sequence of characters, not to perform mathematical operations…

@mikekaganski: right but people rarely realise phone “numbers” are not numbers now that it switched to full numeric format. PBX are no longer designated with letters and digital signalling restricts the ID to digits (though there are 16 symbols, including * and # as the most known). Newbies also forget to style their cells as strings and are surprised by the disappearance of initial zeroes.
