I try to open items that I need to work on, and they open in read only. This does not help me at all. This did not happen in the beginning when I first started using Libre Office. This has become a great inconvenience. Any help; would be appreciated. If this can’t be solved I will look or another program that I can use.

Obviously you need some help. What you don’t seem to realize is that you have to help us before we can help you. For example, you provide practically no details about how your problem arises. Please tell us which Operating System you use, and which version of LibreOffice you are using, and exactly what you do when you save a document (which buttons, menu items, shortcut keys, etc. and in which order), and where you are saving your documents (which folder, directory, library).
Please Edit your original question to provide this information. Please don’t use Add Answer because that is only for solutions.
I’d check first to see if you have lock files present in the directory that you store your documents in.
Libreoffice 6.4.4.2, Windows 10 I also get occasional Read Only files in Writer, created by Writer but can’t edit them on re-opening. The files I remember are stored on a network server. Access is by WiFi so I think it might be more to do with Windows10 not handling WiFi properly, maybe lost connection during save/shut down?
I think it is a bug in Windows, apparently causes problems with MSOffice see Office is slow or stops responding when you open file from network location - Office | Microsoft Docs.
