One possible reason is that you have (somehow) switched the display of images to OFF. I am uncertain how that occurs under Impress, but this is how it happens under Writer (pay attention to menu:View | Images and Charts):

The other slap-head thing to check is if the images are embedded or linked. If linked, are they still in the same place?
