LO 4 allows page styles for which the first page can have a different header. This is useful for books with chapters, and should eliminate the need for separate “first page” page styles. However, I cannot figure out a way to make the first page begin on an odd-numbered (right) page. Is this possible at all?

You have the wrong idea. The First Page page style is designed for using on the first page of a work rather than chapter. For leading chapter page style you are advised to create a custom page style.
