How do I manage page numbering so that I can keep the first page number free?

I am also wanting to add in dashes on either side of the page number

Header and footer where you usually put the page number are attributes of page styles. If you want different looking pages with regard to headers/footers, you need several page styles.

By default, a document a laid out in Default Style page style.

The style side pane (F11 or under MacOS Styles>Manage Styles) will show all styles. Click on the fourth icon in the tool bar to access the pages styles.

  1. Double-click on First Page to restyle your document (which is now full First Page).

  2. Go to the bottom of your cover page and remove the page break you already have there.

  3. Replace it with Insert>More Breaks>Manual Break. Page Break is already preset but make sure. In drop-down menu, Styles, select Default Style and click Change page number to be able to reset next page number to 1.

The page number is a field which you inserted with Insert>Field>Page Number. Consider it like any other character. If you want dashes or decoration around it, type the dashes or other characters where you feel fit.
