Repeat header and caption with different caption on subsequent pages

The style guidelines for dissertations at my university states that “When a table is continued to another page(s), repeat table number and column headers; label table title as such - Table 1 (Continued)”.

I figured out a way to repeat the header and the caption, but I can’t figure out a work around so that the subsequent pages include “(Continued)” while the first does not. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this?

I experimented with conditionally hidden paragraphs but it does not work. My idea was to use a 2-row heading, the first of which would contain “Table 1 (continued)” – of course, if the caption must be set below the table, this does not follow your guidelines. I defined a variable outside the table so that the first occurrence of this caption surrogate is hidden. The value of the variable is toggled in the table (in the repeated heading or in the first non-heading row).

Unfortunately, the heading is computed only once by Writer and used “as is” when needed again.

Unless someone has another idea, I’m afraid this is not possible.
