LibreOffice (Writer and Calc) hangs randomly.

It was installed and running fine. Yesterday, this began to happen at random times. The only way out is to go to task manager, end the task and then reload libreOffice and recover it, losing some work in the process. I reinstalled all of LibreOffice (6.4.4) and the problem is still there. Any ideas as to what I should do? Thank you!

1.) don’t panic,
1a.) if you are on valuable data - backup!, experiments only with copies,
2.) some more info, which OS, which Computer, how long did it work correctly, what changed, activity on disk or in task manger or a standstill, look for ‘running ants’ at the bottom of the screen, other programs work while LO blocked?
3.) does it happen on distinct actions?
4.) try with other files,
5.) provide a sample of a file that crashes, preferably with removed ‘private data’,
6.) try ‘resetting’ the, or starting with a ‘clean’, user profile,
7.) search here or ‘the web’ for other similar reports and try to find hints or solutions,
8.) wait for our pro’s providing more hints and knowledge,
9.) sometimes - with big data on slow machines - LO seems frozen but is only busy saving auto recovery info,
10.) virus check? online virus scanners sometimes use too much ressources,

Where do you store your files (local disk, USB drive, NAS drive, OneDrive, GoogleDrive,…)?

If set, try to disable OpenGL in `Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice -> View -> Category: Graphics Output -> Option: [ ] Use OpenGL for all rendering` and check whether that fixes your problem

Please keep in mind that there are very rare cases, where reinstalling will fix a LibreOffice problem. Many problems are related to defects in a user’s LibreOffice profile, which is not changed by re-installing LibreOffice (if you are on Windows the profile is in %appdata%\libreoffice\4\user)

I see a similar problem. I’m running LibreOffice Version: 6.4.4.2;, 1:6.4.4~rc2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1; CPU threads: 2; Linux 5.0; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3; en-US (en_US.UTF-8); Calc: threaded. I use Linux Mint Tricia 19.3 64-bit. I dropped back to kernel 5.4.0-37, but that makes no difference.

It first hung on a file of about 100K trying to open the paragraph format box. It’s unpredictable; I can be successful on multiple attempts, and there are times when I first open the file that it fails immediately.

For a suggested workaround I renamed ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user, wiping out my profile. With a new (empty) file, I started down the profile options. Somewhere down the list, AND THE LOCATION IS NOT REPRODUCIBLE LibreOffice hangs. I changed icon size and home directory. There’s no other system activity. System monitor shows minimal CPU use, plenty of memory, plenty of swap. soffice.bin and oosplash are sleeping. Other programs run normally. There’s no virus checker

I am still having these problems in Windows 10. I tried several versions of LibreOffice. Actually, the problem I have is within the Calc program. Whatever I type, I have to wait 8-15 seconds to appear in the cell. If I want to correct something, since I blindly typed 15 seconds ago with no feedback, but in a white cell, I double-click the cell, wait other 8-15 seconds, I edit, I hit enter, I wait other 15 seconds etc.
I disabled Skia and did what people recommended here, but without any positive result. If I click again the program window while waiting those seconds, I get the “(Not Responding)” message in the title bar.
Is there any solution to this?..

If it happens only within calc, did you try disabling OpenCL in Tools - Options - LibreOffice - OpenCL?

(A little later)

Before trying the above, I suggest trying in safe mode. Click Help - Restart in safe mode - Continue in safe mode and see if the problem still exists.

If problem disappears then you might try resetting your User Profile, I find the manual method easier.
