when i try to create a database from a spreadsheet in LibreOffice it appears empty

Please provide some further information on what you are attempting and the process used. Can think of many ways to create a database from a spreadsheet. Examples are to use the spreadsheet as the source (not a true database), or copy the data in a sheet and paste into Base. The first can be through a Wizard or the creation of a new Base file. The second also carries the further need of knowing just what database you are using and possibly the connector type.
Also, what are you looking at that makes it appear empty?
Too many things to guess at without more information.
