How to set the default to single spacing

When I’m typing a sentence it will word wrap with single spaced lines. But when I hit the space bar it spaces the next line as double spaced I want to set the default to single. If this is not possible, how to I reset it for the document that I am writing.

This is quite unclear -hitting the space bar produces a space character separating words from each other and not a new line or a new paragraph.

I understand that “space bar” here is for Enter. So, probably, paragraph style or paragraph direct format has Space above paragraph (or below) greater than zero.
