Using Base, I’d like to see an example (very very simple is fine) of Base using a custom-function from a Calc spreadsheet.

Please ask a specific question. It is not clear at all as to what is wanted. Not certain how or why a Calc function is to be used in Base.
Typically any function is done within and as a part of SQL. SQL is specific as to the database used. Base is not a database but rather a front end to a database. You can connect many different types of databases to Base. So it is important to know the database used and the function wanted.
