Libreoffice 7 Keeps Crashing

I am a current user of Libreoffice and have recently updated to version 7. Whenever I attempt to open any existing document on any of the sections the programme simply crashes and is unusable. Previous versons have been no problem at all, can anyone assist please ? I am using a macbook with Catalina version 10.15.6 .

MacOS

Make sure that LibreOffice has full disk access in System Preferences > Security & Privacy

If still not working see if it it opens in Safe Mode, i.e. without loading your User Profile. If it does then you need to archive your old profile and reset.

Windows

Allow LibreOffice access to Defender controlled folder

The below numbered list is from Use the Windows Defender Security app to allow specific apps

  1. Open the Windows Security by
selecting the shield icon in the
task bar or searching the start menu
    for Defender.
  2. Select the Virus & threat
    protection
    tile (or the shield
icon on the left menu bar) and then
    select Ransomware protection.
  3. Under the Controlled folder
    access
    section, select Allow an
    app through Controlled folder
    access
  4. Select Add an allowed app and
follow the prompts to add apps. You
    need to allow access to
    soffice.bin

Turn Off Defender Controlled Folder access

Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.
Switch the Controlled folder access setting from On to Off.

3rd Party Anti-virus

If you do have a third party anti-virus go into settings and then look for something like anti-ransomware or folder protection. Have a look at the blocked apps list, if you see soffice.bin in there change it to Allowed (you might have to read AV help if not obvious). Otherwise go to the Allowed Apps setting and allow soffice.bin, this might not be easy so you might have to add the different LibreOffice executables (Calc, Writer, etc.) to the Allowed list click View All files (not just exe) to see it and add it. Note that 3rd party anti-virus might make files Read Only so you can create a new file but you can’t save it subsequently. Sometimes, you might need to reboot after allowing a program access.

If still not working see if it it opens in Safe Mode (Start Menu > LibreOffice > LibreOffice Safe Mode), i.e. without loading your User Profile. If it does then you need to archive your old profile and reset.

Cheers, Al

[edit 2021-05-06 strike out individual executables as it will not help. Thanks to Mike Kaganski]

The same thing happened to me, it was because I had the menus in tabs, I mean ribbon, change to the standard and open normal.

Thanks for your reply. I can open the programme to the basic screen (from where you choose what you wish to open further) but any actions from there causes Libreoffice to crash and I get a dialog box which states that “Libreoffice will attempt to recover the document as the Libreoffice has crashed” or words to that effect. I have been through the menus but nothing jumps out to help (not sure if I would recognise it if it did!)

Further to my last comment, I now find I cannot open Writer or an existing document, also I cannot create a document there. Any actions in Writer causes the programme to crash. I can open Calc and open new file which I can edit but cannot save. I cannot open previously created Calc documents.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the same result.

I have the same problems in Windows

I have meantime revereted to the previous release which is working as it should until this can be resolved. Thanks to responders so far.

I had this happen on 2 different laptops. I opened LO in safe mode and then chose the option at the bottom to restart everything (ticked both boxes) and that worked ok albeit that it took a while to reset all my personal settings. A bit of a nuclear option I know.

I used your “nuclear option,” and that worked. It’s too bad it came to that though.

Thanks for posting your experience.

This post explains how to restart in safe mode on in macOS. It assumes that LibreOffice will start to the point where it can be restarted in safe mode, however. Fortunately, in this case it typically will get all the way to the Startcenter.

Hi Guys. Thats so much for your unput and sharing your experiences. I really don’t feel inclined to have to jump through hoops to access software which should work in the first place. I wondered initially if perhaps the problem lay with my MAC but it appears that this version is problematic. Think I will stick with version 6.5.4.2 - which works perfectly - until they sort it out.

I have exactly the same problem - LO 7 is useless and not working at all! Windows 10. Please fix this asap - send crash reports multible times.

Why are you writing this here? The “How to use this Ask site” rules on main page tell what is not appropriate on this site. Have you filed a bug report for the crash, with steps to reproduce it?

The same problem is happening to me since I installed the last update. Windows 10. Each time a document in Calc lose focus, the application crashes very quickly afterwards.

Since last Windows update I have the same problem (with LO 7.0.3 and LO 6.4.7.2):
(Unfortunately I can only offer the German version log, Win 10 Pro),

Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: ntdll.dll, Version: 10.0.19041.546, Zeitstempel: 0x5b56177b
Ausnahmecode: 0xc015000f
Fehleroffset: 0x00000000000c073b
ID des fehlerhaften Prozesses: 0x3634

Until now I only had this error with some writer documents.
Reagrds.

Are there any Windows Updates still waiting to install?

I got carried away. This “answer” should be posted as a separate question. Different operating system and a specific error code unrelated to original question. Please post as new question and delete your answer. Cheers, Al

PROBLEM: LO hangs.

FACTS: I’m using LO 7.0.3.1 writer on Win7 with approx 280 pages in a single ODT document containing written text, tables, and 250 or so resized jpg images within Frames. My ODT data file is formatted in book-like fashion to perhaps be published. When I try to add one more jpg image LO crashes (hangs). On smaller LO data files it doesn’t crash. My LO ODT data file that hangs is approx 75MB. I reinstalled an earlier LO version and the problem still occurs. Interestingly, when I open a much smaller document containing images LO doesn’t crash. For some strange reason it appears to me LO can’t properly handle the large size and complexity of my .odt file. I should note that a few of ODT images are ‘compressed’ using LO. Others are compressed with Photoshop. I don’t want to abandon LO because it is a great software application.

QUESTION: (1) Is there a problem with LO7 (and earlier versions) with large writer ODT files containing lots of images, captions, etc?
(2) Any solutions for my hangup problem?

This is not an answer and is not relevant to the title question. Please re-post as an entirely new question. Cheers, Al
