Why can I get the function =sum($c$c:$c4) to work in a linux when I've been using it in a windows spreadsheet for the last 8 years

Why can I get the function =sum($c$4:$c4) to work in linux when I’ve been using it in a windows spreadsheet for the last 8 years.

I should start by saying that existing formulas are still there. This began after I inserted 4 rows at the top of the spreadsheet. I copy the existing cell in d8 to d4. The formula was =sum($c$4:$c4). I wanted to copy this down column D to keep a running total. I go 0 as a result. I tried it with a =average(c4:c8) placed in cell d8 and it kept my formula there as text. When I copied that into cell d7 it didn’t give me anything except a blank cell. Also, formatting each cell individually as a number with 1 leading 0 didn’t help either.

At first, I thought it because I had upgraded to version 7. Someone else in the Facebook forum said they had upgraded too, and according to him, his spreadsheet crashed, whatever that means. I deleted version 7 and reinstalled 6.4. Alas the results were the same.

I think that =SUM($C$4:$C4) is correct.

Check if cell D4 format is Standard (or other number format), not Text (choose menu Format - Cells… - Numbers tab, same as Ctrl+1).

Don’t blame Times New Roman.

I found the solution. I had downloaded the times new roman font and installed it as my default, Calc doesn’t recognize words in that font. It works fine with liberation serif. A shame, I like Times new roman.

eeeeeeeiiikkk!! … what!!! calc doesn’t evaluate formulas depending on the font in which it’s typed??? curious, strange, can anyone confirm?
