Libreoffice alternative to Adobe InDesign ,

Hello,
does Libreoffie offer an alternative for desktop publishing like Adobe InDesign?

Going by the comparision charts

and this statement

i would say LO draw might be comparable with (some parts of) InDesign.

Although i have to admit i never used InDesign, so cant help you with a detailed comparision.

Scribus also looks nice:

Hope that helps.

Thanks, I used InDesign when I was Windows-based and I now use Scribus instead. I did not consider draw as a desktop publishing software.

Writer is not an alternative to InDesign because of the page management concept.

Writer is a text processing application where the primary object of concern is the text. This text is an ordered set of paragraphs presenting the development of a theme from an introduction through a conclusion. This text and its progression will not be altered. Stationery, i.e. pages, will be allocated on demand to contain the text and its constraints.

In a desktop publishing (DTP) application, the primary object is the page. Pages are allocated by the user and divided into static blocks where you can paste text or illustrations. Unless you link blocks, text will be clipped to block dimension and user must either delete part of the text to fit inside the rectangle or manually create new blocks (and perhaps new pages) for what exceeds the initial block.

Writer targets books or articles where the extent is unknown or may change with edits.

DTP applications, like Scribus, InDesign or Quark XPress, target document with a fixed number of pages like newspapers, advertisement brochure or flyers. Space is limited per specification and must not be expanded.

In case, you have no access to DTP app, for small documents (3-5 pages max) without fancy blocks, i.e. full-width paragraphs, you may use Writer as a substitute but you’ll end up with a very tedious direct-formatting job. Your main problem will be to prevent text from flowing to the following page, making sure no extra page is added.
