I have found that not all files open in LibreOffice as they would in MS Word if they were created in MS Word .docx format. For instance, I have a document that is 6 pages long in .docx format, when I open it in LibreOffice, it is 7 pages long an some of the formatting has changed. Not all of paragraphs are lined up correctly and page breaks are not set where they should be.
Is there a simple fix for this? Or is this something that happens all the time with .docx being opened in LibreOffice?
You can only be sure you are going to see the file exactly equal using M$ Word and be sure with the same version of M$ Word, because M$ doesn’t warrant the same look with different version.
LibreOffice isn’t a clone of M$ Office, so don’t expect it can read and interpreter exactly equal a file which definition have over 6000 pages.
For example with LibO there is a option to export to a PDF file with the ODF file embedded, and when you open the PDF file with LibO the ODF file is automatically loaded.

If reproducing a document identically between systems is critical, most people use PDF which was created for that purpose. Things like font rendering can still be slightly different between operating systems and applications, thus if micro-metric precision is required then even the fonts are converted to individual curves (outlining = vector shapes).
Certainly, PDFs are less than ideal for editing.
thinks to make sure:
- have the same fonts installed when comparing the result
- check that automatic hyphenation in both programs works the same/hyphenates words at the same position
If both are the same, and the layout is still different, then please create a document that is as small as you can get and attach it to a bug-report, attaching screenshots and/or pdf-exports of “how it should be” and “how it is in LibreOffice”. Only when developers get to see the actual formattings/elements that are rendered differently, there is a chance of having them fixed.
As a general advice: Don’t use docx for document exchange. If you have to edit documents ind MS Word, use the older doc format. That had years to be adapted to whatever quirks, and docx just is at the beginning of that process.
