Is there a simple way to convert a writer doc to excel
Assuming your Writer document consists of a table (and therefore the logic to convert to a spreadsheet), the simplest way is to open the document, click on the Table, then use menu Table > Select > Table, then Edit > Copy, followed by File > New > Spreadsheet, and then Edit > Paste
Now, just save your new spreadsheet document.
