I'm using LibreOffice and 3.2.1. I am unable to open a WORD .doc file with LibreOffice Writer, but I am able to open the same file using OpenOffice. OpenOffice warned me that I had previously limited the file to read only. I changed the permissions to read and write, and I am still unable to open the file using LibreOffice Writer. Why?

Does your document can be edited in word ? sometimes, when you are saving doc files on an USB key, it can be partially writen or corrupted. This could cause the document to be faulty or crash your Openoffice. If this is a correct editable document, it's definatly a bug.

Not all files created in the various versions of Word and saved to the DOC format can be opened by LO. The situation now under v4.1 is substantially better than it was when v3.5 was the current version i.e., there are 24 bugs for FileOpen+DOC that have been fixed against the v3.5 series. It may be that a specific object or arrangement of content is preventing opening under LO. There are many problems this could be and you provide few details i.e., does the file contain OLE objects, tables, frames, sections, etc.
