How are you trying to set color? With the Background Color button (a bucket icon)? Or choosing menu Format, etc.

Additionally: Where does your sheet come from? Does the sheet use Conditional Formatting with conditions being met on those cells you can’t change the color (by the way: Which color - text, background, borders, shadows,…?)?
Don’t know what you mean. My spread sheet cell colors just disappeared & now I can’t get any colors for cells.

- Are some toolbar Icons disappeared? Then you can switch ON them again. Just use the View - Toolbars - (Formatting) or the Tools - Customize menu item.
- Or the colors disappeared from the inserted characters and results; and are there blue, green, or black values only?? Then (maybe) you switched ON accidentally the View - Value highlighting feature.
