I asked a question and got an answer that worked. How do I thank the author and tell him/her was right and get them credit?

At the upper left corner of every answer there is a number between up/down arrowheads, then a tick mark on a circle. If the circle is grey, click it once to make it green. You may need to wait for a couple of seconds for the color to change. If you are impatient and click again, the action is usually reversed.
The green background signifies that this answer has been selected as the correct/best answer to solve the issue. You can tick only one answer as "the right one", and initially only other users' answers to your own questions.
If you think you received good advice, you can also click the up arrow to upvote the answer. You can upvote any answer, also answers to questions from other users, except your own answers.
If you think you received bad advice, or a response seems malicious in some manner, you can also downvote. There are "trigger happy" users out there, but most users seem to be restrained in their downvoting (which I think is a good thing).
Upvotes and selecting correct answer will earn the respondent "karma points" and badges, and may do the same for you.
Hello
As requestor, just click on the mark in the grey circle aside the top of the answer.
As anybody else, you may click on the caret to notify that you appreciate this answer.
Kind regards, Michel
