writer heading style not applied

I have styles for Heading 1 Heading 2 etc.

I select a piece of text and then in either the style navigator or the context menu for paragraph choose, say Heading 1’

I expect the selected text to now be in the font etc of the Heading 1 style.

This does not happen. There is no change to the text.

I have run ‘Clear Direct Formatting’ on the entire document . The first and last Heading 1 texts are correctly displayed. All the others are displaying as default text *even though the style on that text shows that it is actually set to Heading 1’

@ajlittoz Thank you. After your comment I have looked more closely at the file and found that if I set the text to ‘Default’ character, the heading style is applied.

I had the idea that Options were specific to the document. you mean you had a character style applied? If so, remember character style overrides paragraph style; direct formatting overrides both character and paragraph styles.

@ajlittoz Exactly that. I have a character style for the document and that was applied throughout. Setting the Headings to Default cleared that setting so that the heading style could be applied. Thanks for the explanation.
