Cannot Make LibreOffice Calc open a Tab Delimited File

Folks,

Have LibreOffice version 7.0.3 running and want to have Calc open a *.BOM file which is a tab delimited bill of materials file which MS Excel has no issues with opening. I tried changing the default program thing in Windows 10, but it keeps open that file in Writer rather than Calc.

How do I get LibreOffice’s Calc to open this file when I double click it in file manager?

Thanks!

Chris

Most probably, no way by double click (unless you are ready to globally change file associations). Try right-click → Open with → Calc.

I Googled for .bom as extension, and it seems to be used for files that tells the Apple OS X install software what files in an installation file should be used. Not exactly what you have in mind.

If the data are separated by tabs and it’s a plain text file, you should use .csv (comma separated values, but you can use any sensible character to separate the data) as file extension, then Calc won’t have any problems with it. So, change the extension (right click in the file name in Windows Explorer, etc).
