If I deselect Java on LO will it work on Mavericks?

Want to upgrade to Mavericks but LO calc is an essential tool - If I deselect Java will calc work - it works fine on ML with Java deselected

Basically Do I need Java to run LO 4.0 on an iMac OS X 10.8.4?
