I have a table that formats my date as I want it - 1 Jan 2015 (D-MMM-YYYY) - but when this table is used as a subform the date options don’t allow for this format. There are a limited number of date formats allowed. Is there any way around this?

Would say there is a problem and you should report as a bug here → Bugzilla.
Could get individual control to work by changing it from a date control to a formatted control:
However, could not get the same result in a table control even when changing the column type.
