how do i prevent cells from formatting as links

When I edit text that looks like either a url or an email address, it is formatted as a link, and I cannot work with the text. How do I prevent the cells from being interpreted as links?

LeroyG answers your question but for existing hyperlinks, they can be removed by right-clicking on the hyperlink and selecting Remove hyperlink

Choose menu Tools - AutoCorrect Options… - Options tab, and uncheck URL Recognition.

Tested with LibreOffice (x86); OS: Windows 6.1.
