improve search in ask?

whats up? and a happy new year to all,

i wanted to look up something in a question yesterday, remembered the title was about ‘conversion’, keyed that into the search field and got a 'dropdown list?, a blue selection list proposing plenty questions but not this one:

after some thinking i found it with search for ‘dyadic’, but would think to show it for ‘conversion’ too would bee ‘better’?

it is! found and displayed in the list ‘behind’ the popdown, but below the bottom of the screen, imho normal users look there very rarely,

assume there are too many questions about ‘conversion’, propose to select the newest for the popdown list,

The list of answers to a query is a pop-up list with a slider at right allowing to scroll the list if it overflows to pop-up.

The slider may not be clearly visible but it is there.

Improving the ergonomy of the site is quite difficult:

  • it looks nobody is responsible for tuning/maintaining the site (apart from the infra team at TDF insuring the site is up and running)
  • the site engine has a very slow evolution rate (it is a one-person project, AskBot)
  • tags are unmanaged (anybody, even newcomers, can create new ones; there are now too many of them and an excessive number are just variations with plural forms, hyphens, …); tags could have been a good asset but this is now a real mess

There is presently an experimentation to replace the AskBot engine with Discourse but I’m not convinced this is a good choice because Discourse is not not a direct modern replacement. I feel the Question & Answer mode of operation is a good one, while Discourse leaves the door open for forum mode which, for me, is less convenient and does not encourage commonality in questions.

To show the community your question has been answered, click the ✓ next to the correct answer, and “upvote” by clicking on the ^ arrow of any helpful answers. These are the mechanisms for communicating the quality of the Q&A on this site. Thanks!

In case you need clarification, edit your question (not an answer which is reserved for solutions) or comment the relevant answer.

PS: remove tags common and ask

hi,
thanks for help,
had seen and used slider, question in question not in list, list often irregularly flipping away,
retagging: done,
