The (thin) cursor is difficult to see in a pageful of text.
Press Shift
and any arrow key to start selecting text which gives you a rectangular dark cursor.
I think you should be able to set up the size of the cursor, editing the mouse options in the operating system.
selecting text does not change the cursor.
editing the mouse options in the operating system works —Thank you! —but is limited: even if adjusted to half-a-character —maximum, because the full-character cursor indicates overwrite mode, the cursor is not visible enough.
All text editors (NotePad, NotePad++, PSPad, SciTE, …) have a currentLine —very convenient! Why not Writer? It should be easy to display the currentLine with a special , user-adjustable background colour which would, by-default, be the text background colour, to please the users who like the current presentation —invisible currentLine.
If you select with the mouse clicking the left button:
Single ===> Position (thin, no text selected)
Double ===> Surrounding word selected
Triple ===> Surrounding Sentence selected
Quadruple ===> Surrounding paragraph selected
If you select using the keyboard: In addition to waht @floris_v told
Shift+Ctrl+RightArrow ===> Expand selection till start of next word
Shift+Ctrl+LeftArrow ===> Expand selection till start of this word
If it must be a line, you will need two steps: Pos1, then Shift+End
